Humanistic education - application of the hierarchy of needs

One of the subjects I'm most interested in within this case study is education. As I've decided to "go back to the start" and think about our first discussions about needs, I've discovered an interesting way of looking at the different types of needs in our community. This is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs which I discussed in my previous post.

Each level of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs can be applied to the field of education as discussed in the following video:

Motivation is the direct link between Maslow's hierarchy and education. Each individual student's needs must be met in order to maximize learning. This is a very specific approach to education, namely person-centered education or humanistic education.

Humanistic or person-centered education is based on the work of humanistic psychologists, most notably Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers. I found it interesting to find out that this approach also includes the work of other humanistic pedagogues, such as Maria Montessori. It could possibly be beneficial to research Maria Montessori and Montessori schools further. This approach can also be linked to other interests of mine which are experiential learning and lifelong learning. As I continue to research education and learning I will keep Maslow's hierarchy as a reference.

I think it would also be interesting to observe the hierarchy and question whether or not our needs are being met within our research group. Is learning maximized within this case study?

In conclusion I believe that in order for people to reach their full potential within our community (and within our research group), teachers need to meet students at their current (individual) level.
