The words depression, chronic stress, over fatigue and burn-out are things that you hear more and more. How can we deal with this, and wat kind of activities can make you relaxed again after a busy day at work or school?

How can we prevent stress at work?

By living healthy, optimize working conditions and applying mindfulness, stress can be reduced. Mindfulness increases the resistance of workers against tress, improves brain functions and therefore has a positive effect on the performance.

What is mindfulness?

A way of living. Mindfulness is originally a Buddhistic way of life. The essence of this way of living is briefly: let go of your wishes. If you do not have wishes over the things that you want to keep ore want to change, then there is no harm if things will be different. The starting point is to focus on the reality and to accept the reality for wat it is. It is a kind of meditation.

Mindfulness can help agents self-created stress and phycological problems. There are developed programs/trainings that employees can follow that requires a smaller time investment. The exercises are adapted to be well executed in the work setting.

To sit still and do nothing is annoying

Not everyone responds enthusiastically on the meditation techniques that mindfulness requires. Body awareness can reveal inconveniences or people have simply no patience to sit still and do nothing. Especially when people are very busy, they can feel it as lost time.

Hobbies that stimulate calm attention for example: fishing, playing music, sports, work in the garden and listening to music can also provide relaxation in stress.

That comes to my personal interests: Sports and Yoga. I tried to do a meditation session at my yoga school last week. It started quite good axially, but during the session I was getting bored and my attention went towards all the things I was going to do afterwards. Another thing that I found difficult is that I sit still, I wanted to really sweat, so I could felt good about myself.

For me personally yoga works better. You could call it meditate in movement. It is really an exercise that gives me positive energy at the end. Body movement helps me to relax again and feel good. In de combination with sport makes me really happy. Yoga is something that you do for yourself. Sports has also a social aspect that can cheer you up and motivate.

Conclusion Mindfulness can reduce stress if you are open to it. Hobbies that stimulate calm attention, can also provide relaxation in stress. It is really important that there are opportunities in your life that helps you to deal with stress. It leads to a better balance in your life.
