The past few days I have been experimenting with audio hypnosis to work on subconscious or spiritual design. While the results are interesting and I will definitely continue down this route, there is one thing that struck me. Somehow, the sounds that go on outside of the recording- neighbours dropping something on the floor, a child outside screaming to his friend, a dog barking in the distance, never quite disappear, no matter how 'in a different world' I am.
And so I began thinking about sound and how we can use this to connect or not connect to others. The above video is a great experiment by Bobby mcFerrin which shows the extraordinary connection we can subconsciously have with one another through music. When you listen to the audience, you notice their voices are not only united, it is also their reactions to the music that are similar. By all singing a note that they weren't expected to sing in unison, a great joke was created and everyone laughed together. This joke was entirely non-visible as well as non-verbal, which to me seems to suggest that in some way music is a language far more advanced than we ever imagine it being.
I would like to do an experiment on Wednesday, and would like it very much if you could join me. By playing music through noise-cancelling headphones, I would like to test whether people that are being played the same music feel more or less connected with each other than when two people dance to two different songs. Also, I would like to ask the participants questions about their mind-set, mood, and closeness to the other person before and after the songs.
So: Please let me know if you are willing to help out, and also please let me know if you have noise cancelling headphones or suggestions for songs that bring emotions out in you.
